Vancouver Island Gives to Smokey Mountain

In December 2008, WE International Philippines had the pleasure of helping Scotty Mackinnon distribute a large shipment of quality shoes to high school and college students from the Smokey Mountain garbage dump area.

Born and raised in Canada, Brent International School Manila teacher and basketball coach Scotty Mackinnon has regularly communicated with his old friends from Vancouver Island, Canada about the tremendous poverty he has witnessed firsthand during his trips with WE International Philippines to Smokey Mountain.

In response, Scotty's friends in Canada have compassionately responded by gathering and sending shoes to him in an effort to help meet the need of these children.

The overwhelming majority of students in the Student Sponsorship Program had not previously owned shoes of their own and instead, typically used old rubber slippers as their daily footwear.  It has been a real joy for the students to finally be able to run and play in sturdy sneakers.  On behalf of all the students who were blessed by this initiative, WE International Philippines would like to extend a sincere Thank You to everyone who helped make this day possible!  YOU are what WE is all about!
